This week we’ve let our designer Alex loose on the Top Ten to bring you a Creatives guide to social video…
- THINK ABOUT YOUR AUDIENCE
Identifying your audience early on will help give your work context and enable you to consider the relevant language and visual styles that you need.
- BE PLATFORM READY
We generally work to mobile first policy for social videos. A trick of the trade is to take up as much space as possible! Square (1×1) & vertical (1×2) videos have a bigger impact on mobile devices as they take over the screen more than the traditional 16:9 format.
- TELL A STORY
Make sure your content tells a story. Introduce themes, characters and scenes through the material to help build the story your audience will understand.
- GET TO THE POINT….QUICK
Make sure you start with a bang, with ‘social scroll-ers’ it’s important that you grab their attention before they have had the chance to scroll past. Don’t put logos at the front, when a face is a lot more engaging.
Shock, scare, amuse and excite – there’s lots of ways to express what you want to say. Explore the best ways to connect with your audience – be emotive.
- BE RELEVANT
If you’re going to say something, make sure its of value to the viewer. Paying close attention to trends and upcoming platform features will help you stay a cut above the rest too.
- STILL LIFE
Animate stills and other assets available to you to create dynamic and alluring content. Something with a greater ‘creative’ value can often draw in extra shares and impressions.
- ELEVATE THE FOOTAGE
Take any raw footage you have and take it to the next level using ‘3D’ masking techniques, sound effects, dynamic texts. If you’re doing something different, you’re more likely to be heard above the noise.
- GET CREATIVE WITH DIALOGUE
If your footage has dialogue, visualise the speech using subtitles. With sound off functionality a standard, this gives brands the power to speak to the viewer. They will hit the sound button if they see some attractive text in front of them. Integrating the copy into the scene, or incorporating complimentary animation and effects make text extra striking.
- PLAY IT AGAIN!
Gifs have had a huge resurgence. A big factor to their popularity is their continuous repetition that can reveal otherwise unseen details, or simply hammer in a punch line. Loop your clips to get your audience hooked.
