Happy World Book Day!

Happy World Book Day!

For teachers and students alike, World Book Day is widely considered to be one of the most enjoyable events in the school calendar. The day gives pupils the opportunity to showcase their unique tastes and display their creativity by dressing up as their favourite book character.

All of us in the Spinnaker office have only the fondest memories of our own school day costumes, from Alice in Wonderland to Willy Wonka, Burglar Bill to Frodo Baggins. And it has brought out the bookworm in us all, causing us to reminisce on our own favourite tomes.

Kokoro by Natume Soseki

It’s a very old book, first published in 1914 (and then later translated into other languages) it deals with the transition into more modern culture in Japan and follows the friendship of two main characters and the themes of isolation, guilt, the change in gender roles etc. I read it when I was quite young, it hit very hard and I don’t think I understood it as much as I do now.

Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer

After I finished reading it, it instantly became my favourite book – It’s got everything you’d be looking for in a book: an adventure, a great friendship, complex characters and a certain kind of magic.

The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I really love a book to make me cry (weird I know) and this book REALLY made me cry. It’s a beautiful story which requires a bottle of wine to get through the last few chapters. And whilst most books I instantly forget after reading this one has stayed with me for years.

Each Peach Pear Plum by Allan and Janet Ahlberg

As a kid I wanted it read to me every day until I learnt it off by heart, I think I can still recite it!

We’re All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler

Recommended to me by fellow Spinnaker social media manager Becky, this book is a new favourite, but since I read it last year I have recommended it to so many people! The first half is a slow burner, but that actually adds to the overall impact, and it has one of the most incredible endings I’ve ever read.
